No other city on Earth looks like Shanghai’s Lingang New City. This completely new urban center, whose streets are arranged in concentric circles around a giant man-made, circular lake on land reclaimed from the sea, was the product of a contest won by German architecture firm GMP. Sitting on the coast of Pudong, 60 kilometers from People’s Square, in a place where there was little more than farms and factories before, the new city was meant to be a monument to uber-modern urban design:
