McKinsey: housing construction costs much higher in Sub-Saharan Africa than elsewhere

TrendTracker_2

A March 2015 conference hosted by McKinsey in Nairobi highlighted a number of challenges involved with the global US$650bn gap in affordable housing. Among other issues, it was noted that in Sub-Saharan Africa, it costs US$700-800 per square metre to build moderate cost housing – versus US$350 in South Asia and as little as US$250 per square metre in India. The high costs reflect weaknesses in the supply chain, access to land and the lack of coordination.
