According to NAREIT’s July REITWatch, the average annual total returns from the FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index and the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index were 12.97% and 12.35%, respectively, in USD terms over the 20 years to June 2015. Average annual returns from major US equity indices ranged from 10.34% for the S&P500 composite to 11.68% for the NASDAQ Composite (price returns only) and 11.73% for the Russell 2000 Value Index. The S&P Utilities index produced average annual total returns of 8.98%, while the Domestic Hi-Yield and ML Corporate/Government bond indices generated average annual total returns of 7.75% and 5.73% respectively.
