In its research paper, ‘The Density Dividend: solutions for growing and shrinking cities’, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) argues that the main reason why Istanbul should increase its population density is to improve overall livability and reduce segregation of social groups. Earthquake risk management and environmental issues are also important. The main challenge is that density is associated with shanty towns on one hand or exclusive gated communities on the other.
