The final months of 2018 were game changers for four American metropolitan areas—Austin, New York City, Washington D.C. and Nashville.

That’s because tech companies announced they are targeting all four for mega-projects, and when that happens it alters the fabric of cities, say experts with ties to CityBldr, a Seattle-based company that analyzes real estate data. Amazon.com made the biggest splash with its announcement that it would split its second headquarters between New York City and Arlington, Virginia. The tech giant also announced plans to create a 5,000-job hub in Nashville, while Apple announced a similar project in Austin.
